Chair publishes paper on 'tempered radicals'

Marni Westerman, Chair of Anthropology and Sociology, has published a paper with her colleague from Western University, Laura Huey, in the journal Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education.

The paper is titled "Putting on band-aids: The contradictory roles and 'small wins' of tempered campus radicals." Marni describes the gist of the paper as follows:

"The work of human rights and anti-harassment offices arose from political struggles for rights over the last several decades led by feminist, anti-racist, queer-positive and disability rights groups (among others). This research explores the contradictions experienced by anti-harassment workers in Canadian university settings.

Critical theorist Nancy Fraser suggests that organizational experts stand on the boundary between institutional demands and the needs of the marginalized groups within the organization, and argues that in order to fulfill the demands of their positions, such workers must depoliticize the demands of groups such as those mentioned above.

However, the research indicates that while harassment and discrimination workers are constrained by institutional policies, many retain a commitment to the liberatory goals defined through the human rights struggles undertaken by the marginalized groups they represent. They become ‘tempered radicals’ who seek ‘small wins’ in terms of climate change within large bureaucratic institutions."

You can gain access to the paper online. Read more...
